Grateful For Steven Frieder

Steven Frieder has played sax or flute in every show I’ve done since my first on 1/14/15. Since then I’ve had 10 shows and counting, and never had one where people did’t come up to me after and rave about “that sax/flute player!” The first time I saw Steven play was in a show I went to see, where the only person I knew was the piano player. I did a lot of that early on in my cabaret life, just to see what other people did and how they handled certain situations. I went to network and meet people, and also gain exposure to various musicians.

Just before the show started, I saw Steven walk in and take his place on the stage in front of the drummer. As the show progressed, my attention was drawn again and again to Steven because of how mellow and smooth his contributions were to the show. At the end, when the musicians were packing up, I went over to him to say hello and asked for his card. Shortly after I saw the piano player and commented on how much I liked Steven’s playing.

“Yea” he said, “Me too. But the truth is that I can’t take any credit. I never even met the kid until he walked in here tonight! The guy I had scheduled got sick and called last minute to say he couldn’t make it. So I left a bunch of messages asking friends if they could refer someone. Next thing I knew, Steven walks in, sits down without a rehearsal or so much as a comment from me, and just fits in, like a hand in a glove!”

“Geez”, I thought. Good thing I got his card!
